The short answer

Start by deciding whether easy beach days, nearby dining or a scenic retreat matters most. The official tourism board distinguishes the generally calmer west coast from the Atlantic-facing east. The exact property and beach access still matter more than a broad coast label.

West coast: inspect the beach route

Compare how you reach the sand from your room, not just a sea-view photograph. Check whether you cross a main road, where shade is available and what beach equipment is included. Then price meals and transport on the same basis as a south-coast property; a room-only rate is only one part of the stay.

South coast: map your evenings

Shortlist the restaurants or evening areas you actually want to visit, then check the walk and return route from the accommodation. “Near nightlife” does not guarantee a quiet bedroom or an easy walk with children. Ask about room position and use recent property-specific information when choosing.

East coast: a different type of break

Look around Bathsheba or Cattlewash if the Atlantic landscape is central to your trip. Treat this as its own accommodation choice, not a substitute for a calm-water beach holiday. Confirm meals, grocery access and transport before booking a rental, and ask locally which water activities are appropriate for the conditions.

Room location can change the same hotel

Ask whether the room faces a road, entertainment venue, pool or quieter part of the property. Check stairs and the route to meals if someone has mobility needs. Two rooms carrying the same coastal description can produce noticeably different daily experiences.

For a rental apartment, establish the kitchen setup, cleaning arrangements and nearest practical grocery option. A balcony and sea view may be appealing, but repeated journeys for basic meals should be included in the comparison. Confirm late check-in and who helps if the arrival flight is delayed.

Price the evenings you actually want

Map a few restaurants or evening activities from each shortlisted property. Add realistic transport rather than assuming every nearby place is comfortably walkable. A slightly higher room rate near the things you use daily can compare differently once repeated taxi journeys are included.

For travellers wanting a quiet stay, ask directly about the immediate surroundings and room position. A broad coastal label cannot establish noise levels for a specific address. Use the answers to decide whether the property's atmosphere matches your priorities.

A split stay should create a clear benefit

Our suggestion for a first week is usually one base with deliberate outings. Moving between coasts adds packing, checkout and another arrival. Consider it when you specifically want several days in a different setting, rather than simply wanting to see the other side of the island.

Check the airport journey before finalising the last night. Keep the accommodation choice, daily transport and flight schedule connected so the holiday begins and ends comfortably as well as looking attractive in the middle.
