The short answer

Maho Beach sits by the approach to Princess Juliana International Airport. Use current flight information as a guide, not a guaranteed show schedule. Stay away from jet-blast areas and the airport fence, follow posted warnings and keep a clear route back to your transport.

Check arrivals on the day

Check the airport’s current flight board close to departure from your accommodation. Delays, aircraft changes and operational decisions can alter what you see. Choose a time window you are happy to spend there even if the expected aircraft does not arrive. Avoid buying an outing on a promise of a particular plane unless the cancellation terms suit you.

Watching does not require standing behind a jet

The airport has explicitly warned about jet blast and fence-holding. Do not use the fence as an attraction or cross a warning line for a photograph. Keep children with you and follow instructions from airport or local personnel. If the viewing area is crowded or you cannot keep a safe position, move away and change the plan.

Plan transport from the actual starting point

A visit from a nearby hotel is different from a cruise-port outing or a journey from the French side, Saint-Martin. Ask for a realistic return plan and agree a pickup point you can recognise. Do not turn an ideal map estimate into a fixed promise to the ship or airline. Keep your driver’s contact and meeting details offline.

Keep the stop useful even without a photo

Our suggestion is to treat plane spotting as one short part of the day, with time for a meal or another nearby activity afterwards. Ask about seating, shade and the cost of using a venue’s facilities. Keep the rest of the schedule light; waiting longer for one more arrival should never consume the margin you need for your onward journey.

A comfortable visit begins with a stopping point

Before leaving, decide where you will stand or sit and how you will reach it without obstructing traffic. Ask about facilities if using a venue. A seat overlooking the approach can suit some visitors better than standing on the beach, but check access and spending conditions directly.

Keep photography simple. Do not throw objects towards aircraft or operate a drone near the airport approach. The government's Respect the Sky campaign specifically addresses those dangers. A phone photograph from a permitted viewing position is sufficient; spectacular social-media footage is not a guide to acceptable behaviour.

Separate aviation interest from swimming plans

If someone wants to watch aircraft while another wants a long beach afternoon, agree the compromise beforehand. Choose a fixed viewing window and then move on. Do not assume the conditions at Maho will suit everyone who wants to swim, and do not let one delayed aircraft cancel the rest of the group's day.

A useful limit for a cruise outing

Write down the latest time you must leave Maho, based on a realistic return and the ship's instructions. Tell the driver that time before the visit begins. When the limit arrives, leave even if a flight board suggests a large aircraft is nearly there. Traffic and flight delays cannot be controlled by enthusiasm for the next photograph.

Put it into practice

Before you book

  1. Check live arrivals, without expecting guarantees.
  2. Obey jet-blast and access warnings.
  3. Agree pickup and the latest departure time.
