Where to stay

“By the sea” is not always a swimming beach

Check the route from your room to the water before paying for the view.

The short answer

A sea view, a waterfront location and easy swimming access describe different benefits. Decide which one matters to your group, then ask the property to show the exact route and entry point. A beautiful photograph cannot confirm whether the water is suitable for your swimming ability on a particular day.

Translate the description into an actual route

Start at the room you are booking, not the best room in the photo gallery. Ask where you exit, whether you cross a road or another property, and how you reach the shoreline. Then ask how you enter the water: sand, steps, rocks or a ladder. For a traveller who wants a daily gentle swim, the last few metres may matter more than the distance from the airport.

Separate access from facilities

Even when you can reach a beach, loungers, shade, parking, toilets and food may be separate services. Ask which are included for your room and dates, and whether any are subject to availability. Do not turn a general statement about public beaches into an assumption that you can use every hotel's facilities or cross private grounds. Confirm the actual access route with the property or beach operator.

Look at the day you will really have

A confident swimmer and a family carrying a toddler need different things. Picture leaving the room with towels, water and equipment, finding shade, using the toilet and returning for lunch. Ask for recent photographs of steps and entry points, not just an aerial image. If mobility is a concern, ask about widths, handrails, gradients and assistance in concrete terms rather than relying on the word “accessible”.

Treat conditions as a separate question

Easy entry does not establish safe swimming conditions. Ask who provides local advice and whether any designated swimming area, lifeguard or closure procedure exists. Follow current signs and instructions and do not enter water beyond your ability. A pool can be a useful alternative if the sea is unsuitable, but confirm whether it is available to your party and supervised as needed. Never infer supervision from promotional pictures.

Compare two properties on equal terms

Imagine Property A has a sea-view terrace but requires a drive to your preferred beach. Property B has no sea view but lets you reach a suitable beach by an easy route. Add the expected journeys, parking and facility costs to both options. Neither is inherently better: A may suit evenings at the accommodation; B may suit repeated short beach visits with children. The answer comes from your routine.

A message to send before booking

  • Is the photographed beach directly accessible from our booked room category?
  • Can you send a recent photo or description of the entire walking route and water entry?
  • Which beach facilities are included, and which need booking or payment?
  • What alternative is available when swimming conditions are unsuitable?

Where to verify the details

Use the official destination's beach information to identify the place, then the property or operator for access and facilities. Reviews can help you spot questions, but their dates and room types matter. Save the written answers with your booking so you can choose on confirmed details rather than the headline.
