The short answer

Start with the setting, then compare hotels. Palm Beach is a useful starting point for a resort-focused trip; Eagle Beach for a beach-led stay; Oranjestad for a town base. None replaces checking the exact address, beach route and total cost of getting around.

Palm Beach: plan the evening too

Look at the hotel and restaurant area around Palm Beach if you want several holiday facilities in one neighbourhood. Put your intended dinner spots on a map. Being advertised as near Palm Beach does not establish a comfortable walk, a quiet room or included beach equipment; ask the property about each.

Eagle Beach: distinguish beach access

Compare the actual route from the room to the sand, including any road crossing. Then check shade, chair arrangements and where you would eat without a car. A lower room price can be attractive, but include taxis and meals when comparing it with a property offering more on site.

Oranjestad: a town base

Consider Oranjestad if town walks, shops and cultural stops matter more than stepping directly onto a resort beach. Map the specific beaches you will visit and price those journeys. For a mixed trip, a shorter town stay followed by a beach stay can work, provided moving day is worth the extra packing.

Compare like-for-like stays

Use the same dates and group for every quote. Check child policies, kitchens, cancellation, parking and breakfast separately. Our accommodation guide gives specific examples, but this neighbourhood choice comes first: a hotel cannot compensate for a daily journey you did not want to make.

Look beyond a broad neighbourhood label

Palm Beach can suit visitors who want a busy resort-and-restaurant area, while Eagle Beach provides a different setting for a beach-centred search. Oranjestad gives the town a larger role in the holiday. Within each area, the exact accommodation location still determines whether a walk, road crossing or vehicle journey is needed.

Pin the property's entrance, your likely beach access and two restaurants on a map. Then examine the route between them. Straight-line distance is not the same as a pleasant walk, particularly with children, luggage or limited mobility. Ask the accommodation where guests actually go rather than relying solely on a map radius.

Choose for your evening routine

Someone who wants to walk to dinner most nights should give that requirement substantial weight. Someone who prefers cooking and a quiet terrace may value space and groceries more. An exploring holiday can justify a different base from a week spent mostly at the same beach.

For a family, compare the ease of returning for naps and the sleeping arrangements. For a couple, compare the atmosphere you want after dark with the noise conditions of the particular room. A good base makes repeated activities easy; it does not need to be equally close to every attraction on the island.

Consider one base before splitting the stay

For a first week, our starting suggestion is one accommodation and a couple of separate outings. Moving hotels adds packing, check-out, luggage storage and another check-in. Split the stay only when the second location offers a specific benefit you will use, not merely because two hotels both look appealing.

Compare the accommodation price together with transport and meal arrangements. A cheaper room requiring repeated paid journeys can become a less convenient overall choice. Save the final offer and any answers about beach facilities so the decision rests on the booking you will actually receive.

Put it into practice

Before you book

  1. Map three places you want to reach on foot.
  2. Check the precise route to the beach.
  3. Compare room, food and transport together.
