The short answer

Shortlist Dickenson Bay for a northwestern beach setting, Jolly Harbour for a west-coast base, and English Harbour for a harbour-focused stay. These are useful starting points, not guarantees of walkability or quiet. Map your actual beaches, meals and excursions from the property.

Dickenson Bay: compare the beach arrangements

Check how far the specific room is from the beach, which chairs or shade are included and where you can eat outside the property. A resort package and a self-catering stay solve those needs differently. Compare their complete daily cost rather than choosing from the room photograph alone.

Jolly Harbour: inspect the exact address

A property described by the wider harbour area may have a different beach and grocery route from another nearby listing. Ask for walking directions and parking details. For a villa stay, confirm cleaning, deposits and how late you can collect keys; those practicalities matter after a delayed flight.

English Harbour: match the stay to your outings

Consider this area if the harbour setting and heritage visits are central to your plans. Map beach journeys separately rather than assuming every waterfront property has a swimming beach. Before hiring a car, compare the days you actually need it with taxi quotes for your planned routes, including the airport.

Resort package or independent base?

Compare the total daily routine. A resort can bundle meals and facilities, while an apartment may let you choose where and when to eat. Neither automatically offers better value. Add groceries, restaurant meals, transport and any facilities you would otherwise assume were included.

Ask how many places you can comfortably reach from the exact property. Being near a harbour or beach on a map does not tell you about slopes, roads or a late return. If evening independence matters, investigate that route before giving more weight to the room's decorative details.

Match the base to two priority outings

Choose the two activities you are least willing to skip and map the journey from each shortlisted property. A heritage-led stay around English Harbour produces different travel days from a northwestern resort holiday. There is no need to move hotels for every outing, but repeated long transfers should be visible in the comparison.

For a family, ask about practical room arrangements: separate sleeping areas, kitchen equipment, stairs and the distance to food. A larger room can be useful, but only if the layout suits the people sharing it. Confirm what the displayed rate includes for every traveller.

When one base is enough

Our preference for a first week is usually one well-chosen base, with a small number of deliberate day trips. A split stay adds packing, checkout, luggage handling and another check-in. Consider it only when the move improves several days or gives access to a genuinely different kind of holiday.

Before paying, confirm the airport pickup, late-arrival process and cancellation conditions. These details affect the beginning and end of the stay regardless of which coast appears most attractive in the photographs.
