The short answer

Price the journeys you actually want before hiring a vehicle for the whole holiday. Airport transfers, a driver for one sightseeing day and local transport can suit a beach-led stay; repeated independent exploration may make a rental more useful.

Start with the accommodation address

A resort stay, a harbour apartment and an isolated villa create different transport needs. Ask your host how guests reach groceries, restaurants and the beach from the actual property. A short map distance does not establish an easy pedestrian route, especially with children, bags or after dark.

List the arrival transfer, two likely outings and your preferred evening area. This small route list gives you something concrete to price. It also prevents a car being booked automatically when the group expects to spend most days at one beach.

Compare the whole rental agreement

Ask about licence documentation, any local visitor-permit arrangement, the deposit, insurance conditions, additional drivers and the fuel policy. Confirm how collection and return operate for your flight times. Do not assume that every company handles paperwork or out-of-hours returns in the same way.

Check the vehicle size against people and luggage rather than choosing from a thumbnail photograph. A family may need space for child seats and beach equipment as well as suitcases. Record the condition at collection and follow the company's procedure for reporting existing damage.

Consider a selected block of rental days

An alternative is to use a transfer on arrival and hire for the days you plan to explore. Group an English Harbour day and an eastern outing within that block, with a lighter day between if needed. Price this against the full-week option because delivery charges and minimum hire periods can change the comparison.

Leave an evening taxi in the budget when drinking or avoiding an unfamiliar night drive matters. Having a rental available does not require using it for every journey. Choose the transport that fits the particular outing.

What a taxi quote should establish

Give the pickup address, destination, passenger count, luggage and requested time. Ask for the total price and currency, then clarify waiting time, extra stops and the return. If a child seat or accessibility arrangement is essential, obtain a specific confirmation rather than assuming it will be available.

For a beach day, agree an identifiable pickup point. For a restaurant, decide whether the driver waits or returns later. Retain the contact details offline so a dead phone signal does not turn the end of the outing into a new transport search.

A sightseeing driver is a different purchase

Ask whether you are booking transport only or an interpreted tour. Compare the duration at sites, the freedom to change a stop and the treatment of lunch and admissions. A route covering many places may offer only brief photographs at each; a shorter list can provide a more substantial visit.

For cruise visitors, give the ship's all-aboard deadline and ask how the return margin is handled. For hotel guests, keep the final part of the day free enough to accommodate a longer meal or interesting stop without rushing the drive home.

Choose the arrangement that removes repeated problems

Our practical test is simple: will the vehicle or transfer save effort on several real journeys? If the answer is yes, it may be worth the cost. If it mainly sits unused while you remain at the property, revise the plan. Transport is there to support the holiday, not become an itinerary in its own right.
