The short answer

A rental vehicle gives you control over a varied Bonaire itinerary; a short stay based around one property may work with arranged rides. A pickup is a practical option for equipment, not an automatic requirement for every visitor. Match the vehicle to your actual routes and rental terms.

Count journeys rather than days on the island

List the airport journey, groceries, meals away from your stay and each planned outing. Ask for return quotes with your group and luggage, then compare that total with the full rental cost. Add fuel and compulsory extras; keep a refundable deposit separate from spending. The calculator below lets you compare your own quotes without assuming today’s prices.

Ask what “dive vehicle” includes

Confirm space for passengers as well as tanks and wet equipment. Ask the rental company about racks, cleaning rules, spare tyres, roadside assistance and permitted roads. Photograph the condition at collection and agree how damage is recorded. If a dive package includes a vehicle, check who actually holds the rental contract and the emergency contact.

Check Washington Slagbaai separately

Do not assume that any hired car may enter Washington Slagbaai National Park. Consult STINAPA’s current vehicle and access information, then obtain confirmation from the rental company for your specific booking. Check opening and last-entry times before leaving. Plan the park as its own outing rather than squeezing it between an airport arrival and a dinner booking.

Arrange the return before you leave

If using taxis, agree how and when the driver will collect you, particularly after a remote stop. Save an offline contact number. On departure day, account for refuelling, vehicle inspection and key handover as well as the drive to BON. Follow your airline’s check-in guidance; the distance on the map is only one part of the process.

A shared pickup needs a shared timetable

For two divers, a vehicle may mainly carry equipment between the accommodation and chosen sites. For a diver and a non-diver, that same arrangement can leave one person without transport for much of the day. Write down who needs the car and when before booking the room and vehicle together.

Compare a few alternatives: an operator pickup, a separate taxi for a planned outing, or choosing a base where the non-diver can comfortably spend part of the day. The right answer depends on the actual schedule. A larger vehicle does not solve a conflict in who has access to it.

Check what the rental is equipped for

Ask about secure equipment arrangements, where wet gear may go, cover, excess, fuel and recovery procedures. Confirm the card and deposit requirements for the named driver. An advertised dive pickup should still be compared using the written rental terms, not only the photographs of tanks in the back.

Do not leave valuables in the vehicle while the group is in the water. Arrange their storage before the outing. Ask your accommodation and operator for current local advice about the sites you will use rather than treating any general travel tip as a guarantee against theft or inconvenience.

Give the park its own transport check

Washington Slagbaai requires a separate assessment of the vehicle, current road conditions and the rental contract. Check with both the company and the park. If the selected vehicle or driver is not suitable, book an appropriate guided visit rather than improvising the route.

For the departure day, agree when equipment must be returned and where the vehicle is handed back. Allow time to check the condition together and retain the return documentation. Keep the final morning focused on the airport journey instead of trying to add a last remote stop.

Use your own quotes

Car or transfers: compare the total.

Compare the same days and group. Enter every amount in the same currency. Include fuel, parking and required extras in car costs; leave refundable deposits out. Enter 0 where a cost does not apply.

Rental total = days × daily rate + other car costs. Without a car = airport transfers + other rides. This comparison does not fetch prices or convert currencies.

Put it into practice

Before you book

  1. Compare full rental and return-transfer quotes.
  2. Confirm permitted routes and equipment space.
  3. Save the return pickup and assistance numbers.
