The short answer

These are separate bases, not interchangeable hotel districts. Use Montego Bay as a starting point for an arrival around MBJ, Negril for a beach-focused stay, and Ocho Rios when nearby outings are central to your plan. Price the airport transfer and intended excursions before choosing.

Montego Bay: check the exact resort location

The name Montego Bay can describe a wider holiday area than the streets close to the airport. Ask for the property’s actual transfer estimate and whether a shared transfer makes other stops. For a shorter stay, compare time at the hotel as carefully as the headline room price.

Negril: beach and cliff are different settings

Check whether your chosen property is on a beach or in a cliffside setting, and what access to the water actually involves. A dramatic sea view does not establish a walk-in swimming beach. List the meals and outings you want beyond the property, then ask how you would reach them.

Ocho Rios: organise by excursion area

The tourism board lists Ocho Rios as a distinct resort area. If it is your preferred base, put your must-do attractions on the map and compare door-to-door timings. Avoid booking an apparently cheaper excursion elsewhere without counting the time spent returning to your hotel.

One base or two?

Our suggestion for a first shorter trip is to choose one base and make fewer, better-planned outings. Split a longer stay only when the second area gives you days you could not enjoy from the first. Allow for checkout, packing, luggage and a transfer rather than counting moving day as a full beach day.

When Kingston or Portland is the better starting point

If music, city culture, coffee or the Port Antonio area forms most of your wish list, compare an itinerary built around those interests. Do not automatically choose a western resort and add repeated long outings to compensate. The arrival airport and accommodation route should support the experiences you want most.

Use the map to identify the actual hotel and two priority outings. Ask local providers for realistic travel plans. A country-wide attraction list can make distant places look like neighbouring choices, especially when each is described only by the word Jamaica.

Compare the ordinary day at each property

Check the room's position, beach or water access, food arrangements and the cost of leaving the property. An all-inclusive resort and a small independent hotel solve those needs differently. Compare the full routine, including meals and transport, rather than assuming either model is always cheaper.

For families, ask about sleeping layout, steps, child seating in transfers and the practical route to food. For a quieter stay, investigate the immediate surroundings and room location. Broad resort-area labels do not establish the atmosphere at one particular address.

Make a hotel move earn its place

A split stay can create a useful change of experience, but it also uses time for packing, checkout, driving and another arrival. Our suggestion for a short first trip is one main region or a clear two-base route. Add another location only when the nights there offer more value than the transfer consumes.

Before paying, confirm how the final accommodation connects with the departure airport. Keeping that journey practical can be more important than adding one last attraction on the other side of the island.

Put it into practice

Before you book

  1. Map the property rather than just its resort-area name.
  2. Get a transfer quote for your flight time.
  3. Compare a one-base itinerary with the cost of moving.
