The short answer

Stay close to the part of Las Terrenas you want to use repeatedly. Compare the town shore and Las Ballenas for a town-linked stay, then investigate Bonita or Cosón as a distinct beach outing. Assess swimming conditions locally rather than choosing from a photograph.

A beach name does not describe the whole stay

Las Terrenas is on the Samaná peninsula, but accommodation positions create different holidays. A room near restaurants and the town shore offers a different routine from a property reached by a separate drive. Ask for the exact location and the practical route to meals, groceries and the beach you intend to use.

Decide whether evening independence or a quieter property matters more. A beautiful accommodation photograph does not reveal whether you need transport every time you want lunch elsewhere. Calculate those journeys before deciding that one room is better value than another.

The town shore and Las Ballenas

Official tourism material places the town beach between Punta Popy and Las Ballenas, with businesses and activity along the waterfront. This is a useful area to investigate when you want to combine beach time with the town. Check the particular section outside your property, since boat activity, access and the amount of usable sand can differ.

Las Ballenas is another named stretch to compare within that wider town-based plan. Read current local advice before swimming and consider the facilities your group needs. A description of generally gentle water is not a promise for an individual day or a substitute for supervising children.

Bonita and Cosón: plan an actual outing

The tourism authority describes Cosón to the west of Las Terrenas and associates it with long beach walks and water sports. Consider whether you want to walk, have a meal, take a lesson or simply see a different stretch of coast. Those choices lead to different entrances and transport arrangements.

If Bonita is also on your list, check the route between your intended stops rather than assuming the coastline forms one continuous, easy walk in all conditions. A single substantial beach visit can be more comfortable than a long route with no clear return or refreshment plan.

Choose the water activity separately

Walking beside the sea, swimming and a board-sport lesson are different uses of a beach. Ask an appropriate local provider about the conditions and the part of the shore suitable for your ability. Keep clear of watercraft and follow any marked areas or instructions.

For a family, establish shade, toilets, food and the return journey before committing to a long afternoon. If swimming is shortened, the day can still work with a meal and time on the sand. Choose the setup that accommodates that change rather than a location that only works in ideal conditions.

A suggested two-day introduction

Use the first day near your accommodation, learning the town and finding a comfortable beach routine. On another day, make a deliberate outing towards Bonita or Cosón with lunch and return transport arranged. This lets you compare settings without spending the entire first morning in transit.

Keep the peninsula in perspective

Las Terrenas, Samaná town and the departure point for a particular excursion are not interchangeable addresses. If booking Los Haitises or another organised trip, include the road transfer to its real starting point. For a short stay, a few days based around Las Terrenas can be more satisfying than trying to sample the whole peninsula before moving to another coast.
