The short answer
Give the Colonial City a substantial visit rather than a quick stop between distant resorts. Use Parque Colón and the neighbouring historic streets as a framework, choose one or two interiors to explore and leave time for a proper meal.
Start with the kind of city visit you want
Santo Domingo offers a different experience from a resort beach. The Colonial City combines historic streets, cultural sites and everyday urban life. A guided history visit, a photography walk and a relaxed food-focused afternoon can all work, but they require different pacing. Choose the emphasis before comparing tours.
If coming from a distant hotel, ask for the complete door-to-door duration and the time actually spent in the city. A tour with a long pickup circuit may leave less time than the headline itinerary suggests. An overnight stay can be worth considering when you want an evening meal and an unhurried second morning.
Begin around Parque Colón
The official tourism material places Parque Colón beside the cathedral and among the Colonial City's central landmarks. Use the square as an orientation point, then decide which nearby building or museum you most want to enter. Check its opening, admission and dress requirements directly instead of assuming every historic interior is freely accessible.
This is a useful place to pause and understand the route before walking. Keep drinking water available and build in shade breaks. For travellers using a wheelchair, stroller or mobility aid, ask about surfaces and entrances on the specific route rather than relying on a general promise of an easy city walk.
Use Calle El Conde for the everyday city
Calle El Conde provides a pedestrian shopping-and-café setting through the historic district. Our suggestion is to give it time for a coffee, a modest browse or lunch rather than treating it only as the line between attractions. A route becomes more memorable when you notice how the city is used today as well as how its buildings are described.
Agree a meeting point if members of the group want to shop separately. Keep the address of your accommodation or pickup available offline. Small logistical decisions are easier to settle before people disperse into shops or decide to stay longer over a meal.

Continue towards Calle Las Damas
The tourism authority identifies Calle Las Damas with historic architecture and sites including Fortaleza Ozama and the National Pantheon. Choose the places that match your interests and investigate their current visitor arrangements. Do not assume a named landmark is operating normally simply because it appears on an old tour description.
A knowledgeable guide can explain the colonial setting, including the people and systems behind the buildings. Ask whether the tour includes admission and time inside sites or only an exterior walk. Those are different experiences even if the list of landmark names looks similar.
Leave space around Plaza de España
If the route and your energy allow, finish in the Plaza de España area rather than adding a hurried journey elsewhere in the city. Choose a meal or a pause based on current opening and availability. A relaxed end makes the outing feel like a city visit rather than a sequence of timed photographs.
Day trip or overnight?
For a day trip, protect the return and avoid attaching another distant excursion. For an overnight, pick accommodation by the streets and evening plans you want to reach, and arrange the onward transfer separately. Our preference is fewer stops with enough context to understand them. The city has more to offer than can be comfortably collected in one afternoon.
