The short answer

Compare the holiday you want to have, not just the room rate. Punta Cana offers an eastern resort base, Bayahibe a base near La Romana for coastal and island excursions, and Samaná a peninsula setting. Match your flight and transfer to that choice before paying.

Punta Cana: check what “included” means

Start here if a resort-led stay suits you, but compare the actual package. Airport transfers, certain restaurants, children’s activities and excursions may have separate conditions. Map the hotel itself rather than relying on the wider Punta Cana label, especially if you plan to spend evenings outside the property.

Bayahibe: work backwards from the boat

If island outings are central to your trip, compare a Bayahibe stay with the cost of travelling there for each departure. Ask whether pickup is at your hotel or a meeting point and whether admission and meals are included. A tour sold for Punta Cana can still involve a substantial road transfer before boarding.

Samaná: give the peninsula its own time

Choose the precise town and accommodation on the peninsula, then map the outings you want. Do not add Samaná to a short resort break without pricing the move, lost holiday time and return to your departure airport. Our flight selector currently uses PUJ for the country; that is an airport choice, not coverage of every Dominican arrival airport.

Add Santo Domingo or the north deliberately

A city stay in Santo Domingo and a holiday around Puerto Plata are additional types of trip, not interchangeable substitutes for the three bases above. If either interests you, give it its own route and airport comparison. The country is large enough that an apparently attractive room rate can hide a substantial arrival journey.

Our suggestion is to map two priority outings from every shortlisted property. Include both the outward and return travel. When most desired experiences are far away, reconsider the base before buying more excursions to compensate for its location.

Inspect the property-level details

Ask about beach access, the route to food outside the hotel, room location and any facilities essential to your group. Resort labels can cover a broad area. A sea-view room may still require a long walk through the property, while an apartment close to restaurants may offer more useful independence.

For all-inclusive offers, compare the restaurants, reservation rules, drinks and activities actually included. For self-catering, compare kitchen equipment, groceries, cleaning fees and local transport. Evaluate the ordinary day rather than just the arrival photograph.

One base or two?

A split stay can be useful when it creates a clear change of experience, such as city history followed by beach time. Count packing, checkout and the transfer as part of the move. For a short week, two well-chosen bases are already a substantial plan; adding another region should earn its place through useful time there.

Check the final night's distance from your departure airport. Choosing an accommodation route and choosing flight tickets are linked decisions. Resolve them together instead of booking whichever appears cheapest first and discovering the mismatch afterwards.

Put it into practice

Before you book

  1. Choose the base before the airport.
  2. Compare all-inclusive exclusions.
  3. Count moving days as travel days.
