The short answer
Choose Mullet Bay for a beach outing in the Maho area, Orient Bay when beach venues and watersports shape the day, or Grand Case when you want to combine the shore with a meal in town. Conditions and the specific access point matter more than a universal beach ranking.
Choose the day before choosing the beach
Write down the one thing that would make the outing worthwhile: a comfortable swim, a long lunch, a watersports lesson or time on the sand without much driving. Then compare beaches against that requirement. A famous location can be a poor match if it needs a long transfer or lacks the facilities someone in your group needs.
The beach nearest your accommodation deserves consideration. Returning there for a second relaxed afternoon can be more enjoyable than making a complete island circuit simply to add names to a list. Save longer journeys for places offering a different experience.
Mullet Bay: keep the western outing compact
The visitor bureau places the Mullet Bay area near Maho and the airport. That makes it a candidate for a western beach day, especially if your accommodation is already nearby. Establish the actual beach access and parking arrangement; an address associated with a neighbouring hotel or golf course may not be your entrance.
If adding Maho plane spotting, treat it as a separate short stop with its own safety considerations. Do not exchange a relaxed beach afternoon for hours waiting on an uncertain aircraft arrival. Inspect sea conditions at Mullet Bay itself rather than assuming a nearby bay has identical surf.
Orient Bay: build the day around an activity or venue
Orient Bay is on the French side. The tourism bureau highlights its watersports, beach restaurants and village dining. Pick a specific operator or venue if those are the reason for travelling there, and confirm the arrangements before you leave your hotel.
A booked lesson, casual beach visit and restaurant day can involve different meeting points and charges. Ask whether equipment or seating is included, and what happens if wind or water conditions change. For a mixed group, ensure the non-participants have a comfortable place to wait and know when everyone will meet again.

Grand Case: give the meal some time
Consider Grand Case when food is part of the outing rather than a hurried interruption. The French tourism office identifies the town's seaside lolos among its local dining options. Choose whether you want a casual lunch after the beach or a separate evening meal, then plan clothing, transport and timing accordingly.
Check the menu and opening arrangements of the place you actually want to visit. A town's culinary reputation does not guarantee that every restaurant is open throughout the day, offers the same dishes or suits every budget. If travelling for one particular table, reserve it directly.
Swimming is a decision made on arrival
Look at the entry, waves, signs and local advice before entering the water. A beach described as calm in a travel article can be different on your date. Strong swimmers and young children may need different plans, and a watersports area is not automatically an appropriate swimming zone.
Two manageable combinations
Our suggested western option is Mullet Bay with a short Maho visit only if it fits comfortably. Our suggested French-side option is either a substantial Orient Bay day or Grand Case with a meal. Avoid making all three compulsory in one afternoon. Choosing fewer places leaves time for the actual holiday rather than repeated parking, packing and driving.
