The short answer
For a first week, use one Antigua base and combine a few substantial outings with genuine beach days. Treat Barbuda as an optional journey with its own transport and weather considerations, not a compulsory extra squeezed into the final afternoon.
Set the rhythm before booking excursions
This suggested plan assumes seven nights, leaving six full days between arrival and departure. Adapt the sequence to the location of your accommodation, current opening days and the weather. Reserve the experiences that matter most and leave the others flexible.
Choose whether this is mainly a beach holiday with some history or a sightseeing holiday with beach breaks. Both are reasonable. The distinction prevents everyone expecting a different pace once a full list of non-refundable tours has already been purchased.
Arrival and the first full day
Arrange the airport transfer, settle in and keep the first dinner nearby. Use the following day to enjoy your own area and check the practical route to the beach, meals and shops. If you are self-catering, buy the essentials before filling the week with outings.
An easy beginning also gives you time to confirm any later boat service or pickup arrangement. Avoid treating the arrival afternoon as a spare excursion slot; flight delays, baggage and check-in can consume it quickly.
Second full day: English Harbour
Make Nelson's Dockyard the main historical visit, with time for interpretation and a meal. Consider Pigeon Point afterwards if beach conditions and energy suit. Shirley Heights can be a separate scenic stop or a planned evening, depending on its current programme and your transport.
Do not assume every harbour activity fits into one continuous tour. If the evening is a priority, leave a break before it. Arrange a return that works for the whole group rather than discovering late that one person is too tired to stay.

Third day: a beach and a slower afternoon
Choose a beach that adds a different setting without requiring a complete island circuit. Dickenson Bay, Jolly Beach and your own nearby shore are starting points to compare by location and facilities. Stay longer when the day works; moving on is not obligatory simply because another beach is famous.
Fourth day: the eastern route
Consider Betty's Hope and Devil's Bridge, with a meal and any beach stop treated as optional. Use current access information and a realistic driving plan. The historical site and exposed coastal scenery offer enough contrast without adding the whole south of the island to the same day.
Fifth day: Barbuda or an Antigua alternative
If Barbuda is a priority, confirm the crossing, local transport and return before reserving related activities. Placing it before the final full day leaves some room for a change, although availability is never guaranteed. If a crossing does not suit the group, choose St. John's, another beach or a locally organised outing instead.
Final full day and departure
Keep the last full day available for a favourite place, a moved outing or simply doing less. Protect the final night on your departure island if separate transport bookings are involved. Before flying, allow for the airport transfer, rental return if applicable and the airline's check-in instructions. The itinerary should leave you rested enough to enjoy the final evening, not still trying to complete a checklist.
