One week in the Dominican Republic: choose a route, not every coast

The short answer

For one week, concentrate on one main region or a carefully planned two-base trip. Punta Cana, Bayahibe, Samaná and Puerto Plata are not neighbouring hotel districts; the airport and road transfers should shape the route before you book excursions.

Seven nights do not mean seven full excursion days

Arrival, departure and any hotel move use time. This guide offers suggested structures rather than a fixed commercial tour. Choose the version that matches your priorities, then verify the real transport links and opening arrangements for your dates.

Write down three experiences that matter most. If two are in the same region, that is a strong reason to stay there. If all three are widely separated, decide which can wait for another trip. A shorter list often produces more time at the places you actually wanted to visit.

Option one: a beach base with two outings

Use one resort or independent beach base for the whole week. Keep the first full day local, place the principal excursion around the middle of the stay and reserve another day for a smaller outing. Leave the remaining days for the beach, food and facilities you chose the accommodation for.

For a Bayahibe stay, investigate a suitable Saona outing from its actual departure point. For Punta Cana, inspect the road transfer included in any island or city tour. The name of the selling destination does not tell you where the boat boards or how long the day lasts.

Option two: a Samaná-focused week

Choose the precise base on the peninsula, such as Las Terrenas, and give it several local days. Add one nature excursion after checking where it begins, then retain an uncommitted day for conditions or a favourite beach. Do not treat every attraction associated with Samaná as if it were next door to the accommodation.

Los Haitises is a distinct boat-and-nature experience whose transfer and physical requirements deserve attention. Seasonal wildlife outings need their own date-specific research. A week can be rewarding without including every advertised activity on the peninsula.

Option three: Santo Domingo and a beach stay

An example allocation is two nights in the city and five at a chosen beach base, with the move treated as a travel day. Confirm the airports and road connection before deciding the order. An arrival near Santo Domingo and a departure elsewhere may create a different route from a return flight using one airport.

Give the city one substantial day for the Colonial City and a meal, instead of using both nights merely to recover from transfers. At the beach base, keep the first afternoon easy and avoid immediately scheduling another long journey.

What to leave out

Avoid combining a short Punta Cana stay, Samaná, Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo just because each appears on a highlights list. The amount of ground covered can obscure the practical cost: repeated checkout, waiting, driving and settling into new rooms. Choose a northern itinerary as its own holiday when that is where your interests lie.

Protect the last night

Stay within a practical journey of the departure airport and work backwards from the airline's instructions. Include any rental return and the possibility of a slower road journey. Keep the final full day light enough to revisit a place or accommodate an earlier change. A good week ends with time enjoyed, not an unfinished list of places viewed through a vehicle window.
