The short answer

Start with the operating airline. Confirm the new departure time, ask what assistance is available and keep receipts. A delay does not automatically mean compensation.

Stay reachable

Check the airline app and departure screens, and keep your phone charged. Unless the airline tells you otherwise, follow the original check-in and boarding instructions. Ask staff before leaving the airport. Tell them promptly if you need medication, mobility assistance or help with children.

Ask about meals and an overnight stay

For flights covered by EU or UK rules, assistance depends on the delay and route; an overnight wait may include a hotel and transport. Ask the airline to arrange this first. If you must pay yourself, choose reasonable essentials and keep itemised receipts. Reimbursement depends on the applicable rules and circumstances.

Build a simple record

Save the booking, boarding pass, delay messages, stated reason and actual arrival time. Keep expense reimbursement separate from a compensation request. Notify your hotel or transfer company if your arrival changes. Use the route guide below to check which rules to investigate.
